MFW serves as a platform for designers to showcase street fashion

Maboneng Fashion Week Spring and Summer 2018 collection.

It is nearly that time of the year when street fashion designers are given a chance to showcase their ready-to-wear designs at the Maboneng Fashion Week (MBF) Summer and Spring 2018 (SS/18) Collection.

Established in 2016 by Maria Foster, MFW serves as a platform for designers to showcase street fashion and her vision is to showcase the cream of the crop of local and African designers from the ramp and into the wardrobe.

Defined as a true representation of real South African culture, MFW is a brand not bound to a specific location, it expands countrywide and is held twice a year in April and December.

Added to Foster’s vision is the desire to mentor and develop young talent with limited exposure, paired with the right qualifications.

“Talent is not enough; designers need support in getting their work out there and make sure that everybody knows their skill; that is why we are here. We want to encourage them with the support of our partners to grow their businesses by giving them an opportunity to meet their target audience directly and increase their clientele,” said Foster.

MFW not only serves as a tool for fashionistas and fashion buyers to enjoy a night filled with creativity and entertainment, according to Foster, it will serve to increase economic development in fashion design, enhance the visibility of SA as a centre for fashion design entrepreneurs and attract both national and international buyers.

Designers who would like to showcase at the MFW can drop an email to designers@mabonengfashionweek.com and organisations that would like to partner with MFW in order to grow local businesses, remove the stigma of Johannesburg being dangerous and make Johannesburg a city of creativity through fashion and art, can email patners@mabonengfashionweek.com .

The Maboneng Fashion Week will start on April 24 until May 3, from April 29 to May 1 fashion fanatics will experience the MFW afro-chic designer pop-up.

On May 1, fashionistas will witness an MFW street parade and will culminate in the MFW trade event from May 2 to the 3rd.
