Sasol bursary programme helps students realize their dreams

Fueling the young minds of SA.

Students who secured bursaries from the Sasol Corporate Bursary programme for 2018 gathered in Secunda, Mpumalanga this past week to prepare for the academic year ahead.

Sasol briefed them about how they will be supported throughout their studies and provided a forum for them to interact and network.

“We are really pleased with the calibre of our corporate bursary recipients this year. They represent some of South Africa’s brightest and most motivated young people,” said Monica Luwes, manager of the Graduate Centre at Sasol Corporate Bursary Services.

She said Sasol’s goal is not just to provide them with funding for their tertiary education but also to provide them with the emotional support and practical assistance they need to excel and reach their full potential.

The Sasol Corporate Bursary programme seeks to invest in South Africa by attracting applications from the country’s top-performing science and mathematics learners.

To be considered, applicants need to obtain 70 percent for maths, 70 percent for Science and 60 percent in English. They also need to be South African citizens.

Sasol also provides postgraduate bursary opportunities in Science and Engineering to deserving students.

Considered to be one of the most comprehensive bursary programmes in the country, Sasol has, for the past 30 years, been awarding bursaries to top performing learners in maths and science.

The bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation, textbooks, study tools and pocket money. University bursaries are offered for Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Commerce (with a Chartered Accountant focus).

University of Technology bursaries are offered for Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Process Instrumentation and Mine Surveying.

Bursars also have the opportunity to put into practice what they are studying through vacation work at Sasol’s facilities in Secunda and Sasolburg in the Free State.

They also get to be part of Sasol’s Graduate Development Programme once they complete their studies.

Luwes said it was particularly pleasing to see the growth in the intake of female bursary recipients this year. She said this was in line with Sasol’s commitment to building a diverse STEM skills base in South Africa.

“For us, the bursary is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long and lasting relationship between Sasol and the students.”

Bursary recipients said: Karini Maritz, from Secunda who will be studying Industrial Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch, said, “After the orientation week, I’m excited about university because of the opportunity Sasol has given me. I met my mini-family and believe we will support each other throughout our studies.”

Tsholofelo Magagula, from Witbank who will be studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria, said, “I’m going into varsity in 2018 knowing that I have a good support system from Sasol, this week has given me insight as to what lies ahead.

“Sasol will have my back financially and in many other ways as well. I gained some valuable knowledge about maintaining a balanced student life.”

Selaelo Senyolo from Johannesburg who will be studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand said, “It was such an easy process to apply for the bursary and it took me an hour tops. I’m excited to be a female engineer part of the diverse Sasol family.”

Chabalala Mohle, from Polokwane who will be studying Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town, said, “It was exciting for me to see so many females among my peers.

“Seeing the plant and meeting the vacation work students who were in my shoes last year made me realise I chose the right career. Overall the orientation week has given me confidence and motivation as I approach my 2018 academic year.”
