Top Class aims to keep learners in the lead

While schools officially re-opened on Wednesday, January 17, Top Class Tutoring Institute learners were already in class on Saturday, January 13.

The institute is basically a community Saturday school were learners get assisted with the subjects they are struggling in at school. It serves as a support programme and has managed to achieve 98,2% pass last year.

The institute’s founder and tutor Philisiwe Chonco said that they started early to prepare learners for the next grade prior they go to classes formally.

“We started early to ensure that our learners are ahead and go to school prepared.

“It also boosts their confidence, you know it feels good when you are in class and your teacher is teaching something that you have done already. To them it’s more like a revision,” said Chonco.

“Another thing is that we want the parents to see the progress as early as possible. We also want to broaden the learners’ knowledge and make their teachers’ job easier,” she added.

Normally teachers are unable to teach on the first day of schooling because they are busy placing learners in the class, registrations, stationery distributions etc., thus Top Class aims to close the gap and make sure the learners don’t fall behind.

On Saturday that they re-opened they already had 38 new registrations and Chonco said that more parents are still calling to inquire.

“Like we said previously, it is first come-first serve as we can only accommodate 10 learners per Grade, registration is R500 and that is all you have to pay for the entire year,” said Chonco.
