SADTU: Schools closed as teachers march to Pretoria

Learners turned back while teachers go on strike.

Brian Vukeya, a Grade 12 learner from Kelokitso Comprehensive High School, says today’s protest by the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) affected many learners.

All the classes were locked at Kelokitso High and learners were left stranded. Brian says the teachers union should avoid protests at a time when learners are about to sit for their end of year exams.

“I arrived at school at 7.30 am and sat outside till 1 pm. This is unacceptable. How are we supposed to prepare for exams when teachers aren’t available?

“There’s really no time to waste – only a few days left before the exams commence,” he said disappointedly.

SADTU is marching to the Department of Education and Department of Higher Education and Training in Pretoria. The union demands that teachers be given the 0.5% pay progression like all other public service employees.

One message from a series of tweets by the union read, “We want Zuma to give us our 0,5% pay progression and not reshuffling.”

SADTU president, Magope Maphila called on the DHET to respect SADTU and further said TVET lecturers should be trained.

Here are some of the tweets from the march:
