‘Education and talent go hand in hand’

COPESSA branch in Protea Glen volunteered to teach the children how to play the drums

The Community-based Prevention and Empowerment Strategies in South Africa (COPESSA) clearly indicated that their vision is the creation of safe, caring physical and emotional spaces for children in their homes, schools, and communities.

In their endeavour to create better communities, the COPESSA branch in Protea Glen Extension 11 is offering different informative, educational and skills development activities and are calling on residents to join them in their mission.

Kamogelo Mgiba, one of the volunteers at COPESSA said that they were going the extra mile with the provision of home work assistance and helping the kids and interested youth to identify their talents while making sure their studies remained a priority.

“We made it our responsibility to make sure that our local kids are not only safe but that they also have the required life skills to help them face life’s challenges with their heads held high.

“We feel that education accompanied by natural talents or vice versa, make a great weapon to take this life on. As such, in our daily activities with these kids, we have given assisting them with their homework the highest priority,” said Mgiba.

The centre offers a tight schedule of daily activities after the home work is completed. On Monday they do arts and crafts and they have Book Tuesdays which focuses on reading and spelling.

Wednesday is theatre practice while life skills talks take place on Thursdays where they discuss child abuse and related matters. Sports and adventure wraps up the week on Friday.

According to Mgiba, weekends are reserved for dealing with issues which confront teenagers.
