Imbawula warming many homes this winter

Imbawula is safe and a good way to keep warm this winter

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) is on a crusade to reduce fire incidents caused by unmonitored paraffin stoves, candles and braziers in informal settlements.

Johannesburg EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi said,“We received a warning from the South African Weather Service that most parts of Gauteng province, including the City of Johannesburg, will experience significant drops in temperatures with wet conditions from July 17 to the 23rd.

“The cold front is currently moving towards the Western Cape, where forecasters say a sprinkling of snow is expected in high lying areas.”

He said the significant drop in temperatures meant that most of the citizens of the City of Johannesburg would be exposed to extremely cold temperatures forcing them to use heating and lighting appliances to try and warm themselves.

He warned that heating appliances might be dangerous if they are used unsafely.

“This week alone we had about 10 people who died in various fire incidents which are an unfortunate situation.

“It is because of this reason that EMS has rolled out fire fighting training courses in these communities.

“Interested communities should visit their nearest Fire Stations for fire fighting training,” he said.

Despite several fire incidents reported caused by unmonitored braziers, Qhobokwane Mngomezulu (41) from Snake Park continues using braziers to warm himself and his family.

“My wish was to replace this brazier bin with alternative heating appliance but I don’t have money to purchase it because I’m unemployed.

“This is the only alternative to keeping warm this winter. Joburg is a very cold place this week,” he said.

People interested in undergoing the free fire fighting training course provided by EMS should contact their offices on (011) 982 1248.
