Soweto: “No to prepaid meters, they must restore our free 6000 litres of water”

Service delivery protest breaks out in Soweto.

A service delivery protest broke out this morning in Soweto as Diepkloof, Klispruit, and Jabavu residents are fed up with Eskom‘s prepaid metering system.

There’s also a claim that the water supply entity, Joburg Water, has cut the 6000 litres of free water.

Spokesperson of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Edna Mamonyane said: “I received a call in the early hours of the morning around 5 am. It was a service delivery protest by residents over prepaid meters and the ‘revoked’ free water.

“We immediately sent out metro police officers to Chris Hani Road and to Regina Mundi not very far from Thokoza Park, and the South African Police Service also deployed additional officers.

“At about 8 am, we managed to calm down the situation and pleaded with the protesters to disperse and to also clear traffic by removing stones and burning tyres,” she said.

Mamonyane added that: “Some of the roads were totally blocked/closed down – which made the Rea Vaya bus drivers and other motorists struggle to get through.”

Apparently, the area has a lot of pensioners who can’t afford to buy water or electricity.
