Shack fire claims the life of two people at Princes Maponya

Residents urged to be safe this Winter.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services responded to multiple shacks on fire incident this Saturday night at Princes Maponya Informal Settlement in Jeppestown at around 18h40.

Two adults lost their lives when they were burned beyond recognition during the fire incident, no other injuries were reported during the fire incident, the cause of the fire is believed to be a deliberate fire setting and our fire investigation team will be investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

About 110 shacks were affected by the fire, leaving about 160 people displaced, Disaster Management officials together with other city stakeholders on site facilitating relief process for the affected families.

Residents are urged to use their heating and lighting appliances like candles, paraffin stoves, heaters, imbawula or brazier safely this winter, not to leave them unattended while in use so that we can avoid these devastating fire incidents during this winter period.

Through our Public Education section, we will also be intensifying our Winter fire safety campaigns targeting all our most vulnerable communities.

Our 189 informal settlements throughout the city will be educated about the safe use of this heating and lighting appliances to reduce the number of fire incidents and fatalities this winter.
