Graphic Image: Brutal murder of 2 women adds to spike in violent crime against women

Naledi police rushed to the scene where the lifeless body of a woman was discovered this Saturday, May 13.

This after residents took to the streets in protest at the spiking murder rate within the community.

The victims’ families have positively identified the remains as being the bodies of Bongeka Phungula (28) and Popi Qwabe (24), who had been missing since Friday.

This latest discovery brings to five the number of dead female bodies found in Gauteng, in what appears to be an increase in crimes committed against women.

According to reports, Phungula’s body was found with gunshots to the head while Qwabe’s body was identified at a mortuary.

Both young women appear to have been raped before their murders.

Tladi residents at the scene claim to have witnessed a suspicious vehicle following a young woman. They followed the vehicle and heard gunshots being fired.

Afraid, they fled the scene only to learn the following morning that the girl had been murdered and dumped in Tladi.

No suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder, but police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo confirmed their identities yesterday.

Masondo said, “The two friends, Phungula and Qwabe, were found on Friday and Saturday but were only identified yesterday by their families. Another body of 27-year-old Lerato Moloi was found half naked and she is suspected to have been raped.”

Arrests have been effected in Moloi’s case, but police were still seeking answers in the murders of Phungula and Qwabe.

This latest killing comes after the badly burnt body of Karabo Mokoena was found in Bramley, allegedly killed by her former boyfriend, and has sparked national outrage with president Jacob Zuma strongly denouncing these senseless acts of violence against women.

Councillor Mpho Sesedinyane also spoke out about the violence against women in the community and urged men in the area to desist from committing such acts.
