‘It is easier to build girls and boys than repair men and women’
Kids at Work ensures nothing but the best for the children
Maria Kgasago the principal at Kids at Work Day Care Centre in Meadowlands, values teaching children useful skills from a younger age.
“It is easier to build girls and boys than repair men and women,” said Kgasago.
Kgasago started the day care centre in 2003 when she witnessed a car accident involving children between the ages of three to four years old.
“I was working for the Department of Health at that time and I realised that we can do better, we cannot let our children die for a better education.”
In the same year, she opened the day care centre which is a Christian school dedicated to teaching children Christian principles.
“Children should know that their valuable and that their potential is limitless,” said Kgasago.
Kgasago said that when she started, it was not easy as she started with eight children but the number grew to 53 the following year.
“The first year was very difficult but I told myself that I will not quit.”
The day care centre offers computer lessons to the children in order to prepare the children with basic computer lessons that they can use when they leave the crèche.
According to Kgasago as successful the day care centre may be she still encounters challenges, one of them being the parent’s failure to understand her vision.
“Parents must not just drop their children; we must work together with the parents because the growth and education of the child does not rely solely on the teacher.”
Other than teaching the children computer basic skills, the day care also teaches monkeynastix, literature, little champ (which involves teaching the children ball skills), Swimming and music.
The day care has made Meadowlands proud by winning the first position in the little voices provincial competition.
Kids at work has opened another centre in Meadowlands and will open two centres this in Protea Glen and Glenridge.
“I have children who stay in Protea Glen, Glenridge and Ormonde that attend here in Meadowlands, hence I saw the need to open branches in those areas,” she said.
Kgasago plans to franchise Kids at Work in Soweto.
Registration for children will open in July for next year.
