The Protea Glen police want to make residents aware of an increase in house breakings and theft cases in the area. The most affected areas are Protea Glen Ext 11, 16, 20, 22, 24 and 30. Most of the housebreaking and theft cases have been taking place during the day when people are at work. According to police reports, the suspects wait for house owners to leave for work and they enter and take household items.
“The targeted household items are:
- Flat Screen TV’s
- Tablets
- Laptops
- Cellphones
- PlayStations
- Music systems
- Jewellery
- Cash and
- Clothes.
There are also cases where fridges were stolen. We advise community members to ensure that their houses are secured with burglar bars on all windows and doors. If alarms are installed it must be activated all the times people leave the house,” said Sergeant Vincent Mashiteng, communication officer at the station. The community is also encouraged to form WhatsApp group chats to share information about any criminal activities taking place in their area. This will also assist to report any suspicious people and vehicles to the police. Mashiteng said, “People must ensure that they attend street and block meetings. They should participate in street and block committees. People should also report any suspicious vehicles carrying household goods to the police.” Late last week the police members and patrollers conducted an awareness campaign to address the housebreaking and theft cases in the above mentioned areas. During the campaign pamphlets were distributed with crime prevention tips on housebreaking and theft and emergency numbers. “In order to deal with the crime hot spots we are appealing to the community to assist the police with information which will lead to the arrest of the suspects. The police have intensified patrols and operations at the identified crime hot spots,” said Mashiteng.
