Emadwaleni rocks 91%

Dedication and commitment by teachers and learners pays off.

Emadwaleni Secondary School in Orlando West got a 91% pass rate in the class of 2016. This is a huge improvement from the 88% obtained in 2015.

Out of the four high schools in Orlando West, Emadwaleni came out tops in terms of performance. The school had a total of 67 learners who sat for the exams.

16 of them passed with bachelors while 34 got diplomas and 11 got higher certificates. The 91% obtained by the school translate to 60 learners passing out of the 67 who wrote the final exams.

School principal Vuyo Mkwanazi said this achievement can be attributed to the hard work and commitment put in by learners.

“The effort put in by the teachers in terms of extra classes, moral support to the learners and the love for these learners should be commended as well. We can not forget the parents and the support they offered us,” said Mkwanazi.

According to the principal, the school’s performance in the June exams was not very impressive obtaining below 50%.

They had to call the parents and the School Governing Body (SGB) to discuss ways of improving their results.

“Most of our learners were struggling with mathematics literacy. We decided to have extra classes dedicated to mathematics literacy on Sundays. Parents and the SGB were very supportive in that regard,” said the principal.

Mkwanazi, a former mathematics teacher himself had to come in on Sundays to run those classes  together with another teacher Zanele Lwana.

Besides mathematics, the school did very well in history and tourism as well according to Mkwanazi.

Extra classes and the dedication of the teachers from the beginning of the year  has made the school a top achiever in the area with its 91% pass rate in ten years. The last time the schools got a 90% pass rate while the school is celebrating this achievement, teachers have already started with plans of making 2017 a year of good results once again.
