Gauteng learners get free tablets

As from Monday next week, all Gauteng Grade 12 pupils will get free, unlimited data every day from 5am to 9pm.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi  has announced that as from next week, all the 2016 Grade 12 learners in Gauteng schools will receive their educational tablets.

“In Gauteng, if you want to see a chalk or a duster you must go to a museum, you must not go into our classrooms,” said MEC Lefusi.

He said all Grade 12 learners will as from Monday get free, unlimited data every day from 5am to 9pm.

On of the beneficiaries, 19-year-old Katlego Kobuoe from Anchor High School in Soweto in Johannesburg says he cannot wait to complete his matric and start studying towards his dream career of being a Mechanical Engineer.

He was one of the young people who met with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa during a Youth Development Expo held at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus.

He plans to enrol with South West Gauteng Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College next year to realise his dream.

“I just want to see myself work for a German company, BMW,” said Kobuoe.

Former rugby player Ashwin Wilemse motivated the learners who gathered at the event and told them to work hard.

“For you guys, anything is possible,” said Wilemse, who also survived drug abuse, suicide and gangsterism at the age of 16.”

MEC Lesufi said the tablets were part of government’s plans to improve the lives of the youth.

The Youth Development Expo was held by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was supported by a number of Ministers and Deputy Ministers, City of Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau and Gauteng Education MEC, the National Youth Development Agency and others. More than 60 companies participated in the expo through exhibition, as well as government departments and state entities.-SAnews.gov.za
