Classes of 40 to add five more pupils

GDE to work non-stop till all unplaced pupils have found space.

On January 28, Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe said 9 569 pupils were still unplaced at schools.

Bodibe said the department has received 251 889 new applications since April last year.

So far, GDE has placed 242 320 pupils.

“In an effort to ensure that all unplaced pupils are placed, GDE has asked schools to admit an additional five pupils in each classroom.

“This means 45 pupils would now occupy one class instead of 40 as initially planned, until a permanent solution is found,” he said.

Bodibe said more classes will also be created in primary schools on a temporary basis.

“In some areas the department is moving mobile classrooms where they are not needed to schools in pressure areas. Scholar transport will also be introduced to transport pupils to under-subscribed schools,” said Bodibe.

The placement of pupils will continue until all unplaced pupils are in class.
