No Trauma Unit at Bara for the next six months

Patients urged to only report to Bara with a referral letter from their local clinics.

The medical emergency unit of the largest hospital in the world Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, floor will be renovated as from next week.

The re-flooring of the unit would take place from June 1 to ‘around’ December 2015 at a cost of R4.5m,” said Dr Sandile Mfenyana, chief executive officer (CEO) of the hospital.

“Currently we are facing problems with uneven floors causing damage to our stretchers and wheelchairs.

“Most important, though is the fact that blood is trapped in these holes creating a health hazard,” said Dr Mfenyana.

He said, “During the renovations, the trauma unit will be closed arrangements have been made with nearby community health centres and the Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital (Zola-Jabulani Clinic) to provide the services in the sites.

“Patients are requested to start at their nearest clinics and only come to bara with a referral letter.”

“We will be sending staff to Bheki Mlangeni Hospital, including car accident emergency unit staff, nurses and specialists to ensure that patients are not inconvenienced while we renovate the unit,” Dr Mfenyana added.
