Disabled woman’s house burns down

Family loses everything in inferno.

The Molefe family house was burned to ashes last Saturday leaving the family homeless during winter.

Gloria Molefe who is wheelchair bound said if there was electricity in her area, her house would be safe.

“After we experience load-shedding on Saturday, my five-year-old son lit a candle and while he was in the kitchen the candle fell and burned everything we ever owned.

“Everything including electrical appliances, food, clothes, beds and uniform caught fire and burned to ashes too, we are still assessing the situation to see if our personal documents are safe or have also been destroyed.”

Molefe said that no one was injured during the burning of the house.

“During the fire, everyone ran outside so they could be safe and the only person who was affected by the fire was my mother who was rushed to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.”

The area councillor Elmon Dube said he was informed about the incident while he was at a funeral.

“I had to leave the funeral and rush to see how best we can help to put out the fire and help the family, but unfortunately we arrived late at the house.

“We tried to call Emergency Management Services and disaster management and other people who might have helped but it was too late as offices were closed and worst part there was no electricity and we didn’t have other resources to use since there was no electricity but we will try by all means to help the family.”

Molefe said: “The only help we have received now was from a good Samaritan who donated corrugated iron to fix the roof and help from Holy Rosary Saint Ann Women’s Group and we do appeal to residents to help donate food, clothes and toiletries.”
