Aluta Continua at Medupi

Reports of intimidation surface as strike action enters week six.

The situation remains tense at the construction site of the Medupi power station in Lephalale, Limpopo.

This is according to a statement released by Eskom yesterday morning saying there have been reports of intimidation by striking workers to those who want to return to work.

“Violence and intimidation was experienced in the accommodation areas where these employees reside as well as en-route to the project site,” reads a statement by Eskom.

Project and contractor security together with the police have contained the situation according to the statement.

Contract workers have been on a six week long strike demanding bonuses and better living conditions.

The power utility obtained a court interdict forcing workers to return to work but they have been defiant.

The strike action has resulted in construction of the power station being delayed.

Last week acting divisional executive for group Capital Abram Masango said the estimation date for the completion of the power station is 2021.

Medupi power station is five years behind schedule because of strikes and problems with contractors.
