Tip-off leads to arrest of robbers

Metro police and Metrorail reflective vests and badges among possessions seized by police.

Residents watched along the tape cordoning off the scene at the Diepkloof Extreme Park, Zone Two as the eight alleged robbers lay handcuffed on the road.

The eight men, allegedly on their way to rob a business were cornered by police on Immink Drive, yesterday (Sunday April, 12).

Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said, “Police acted on the crime intelligence, and the alleged robbers in four cars were caught at a meeting place and pounced as they tried to leave.

“We got information that the men were going to a business premises to cut the safe and get the money.

Police seized two unlicensed firearms, a ladder, jack hammer, a steel grinder and other tools were recovered from the vehicles.

“Metro police and Metrorail reflective vests and badges were also seized and four registration plates believed to be false, were taken from the cars.”

Makhubela said police will investigate the incident whether it is related to one in which a former Bafana Bafana player and nine others were arrested for planning to rob a truck carrying cigarettes.

“The eight are to appear in the Protea Magistrates court tomorrow (Tuesday, April 14),” he said.
