Kliptown up for a major makeover

Government departments commit themselves to rebuilding one of the oldest townships in the country.

In celebration of International Women’s day MECs reaffirmed residents of Kliptown that the government is going to revitalise their township.

Delivering her keynote address at the commemoration held at the Walter Sisulu Square on Sunday March 8 Infrastructure Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza announced government plans to rebuild one of the oldest townships in this country.

Mayathula-Khoza also confirmed plans to convert the home of struggle stalwart Charlotte Maxeke in to a museum and interpretation centre.

On the evening of the same day Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko was honouring women who play care giving roles in their communities.

At the award ceremony MEC Faith Mazibuko again spoke about plans to revitalise Kliptown.

“People of Kliptown should expect a mega city to be built in their area” said Mazibuko.

She added that as part of the Ten Pillars programme announced by Premier David Makhura in his state of the province address her department will play a role of social redevelopment in Kliptown.

The MEC said while the township is being revitalised in anyway, it is vital to also revitalise it socially and that is where her department comes in.
