Eskom Switch Ova! Project continues
Switch Ova! to roll out in areas such as Orlando West, Meadowlands, Mmesi Park, Diepkloof, Protea North, Kagiso, Chiawelo and Jabulani Flats.
The implementation of Eskom’s Infrastructure Upgrade programme to help ensure stable and safe power supply continues.
The project has made steady progress with around 2 000 households installed and switched in the Dobsonville area.
Dobsonville Extension One is fully switched; Extension Two roll-out is about 95 percent complete and Extension Three has commenced with split metering technology installations.
Eskom spokesperson Reneiloe Semenya says the majority of customers (92%) opted for prepaid split metering, thus taking control of their electricity consumption.
“Customers are assisted through this journey to legal, safe and efficient power use, through support visits and further education and advice on energy efficiency, Free Basic Electricity and the Inclining Block Tariff,” said Semenya.
Semenya says the project has expanded and is also rolling out in areas such as Orlando West, Meadowlands, Mmesi Park, Diepkloof, Protea North, Kagiso, Chiawelo and Jabulani Flats.
To date, around 28 000 split meters have been installed in Soweto and 8000 meters have been activated.
“Throughout the rollout process, every effort is made to address any concern raised by the community.
“There is continuous engagement with residents to ensure factual information sharing and understanding regarding the implementation of split metering, both at a community level in the form of community meetings and at the individual household level through door-to-door visits,” she said.
