City encourages bus companies to end strike

Rea Vaya bus drivers have caused disruption to services since Monday by embarking on an illegal strike.

After two days of bus services being unavailable, the City has instructed bus operating companies, Piotrans and Ditsamaiso to approach the Labour Court to put an end to the illegal work stoppage.

According to Benny Makgoga, the City’s Director of Service Promotions said the City relies heavily on these bus operating companies to ensure smooth operations for the convenience of commuters.

“The disruptions were only communicated to us later on Monday morning. We apologise to commuters and we’re trying our best to get the issue resolved with the help of Piotrans and Ditsamaiso” said Mokgoga.

Speaking on behalf of Piotrans, Dumisani Mntambo, General Manager of Strategy and Transformation, said the company had bended backwards for employees in the last months to maintain a good working relationship amongst its employees.

“The drivers have not communicated their grievances to us therefore it is not clear as to why they’re striking.” said Mntambo who expressed concern over the miscommunication by staff.

“They parked buses in the inner City and went to hand over a memo to JRA.” explained Mntambo. “Their shopstewards have not communicated with us any further”.

The City has asked Piotrans to initiate an investigation into what was behind the desertion of 133 buses in the inner City.

The services continue to be unavailable and passengers will be kept informed on updates.

According to a statement by Rea Vaya, passengers who have loaded money on their cards are able to use their cards as a debit card for other purchases.

The City apologises to residents and passengers for the inconvenience.
