Fight over a cap leaves two classrooms up in flames

15-year-old pupil holds teachers captive.

A-15-year-old boy who allegedly set fire to two classrooms at his school has been suspended pending a hearing which is due to take place on Thursday February 5.

The incident took place at Emshukantambo High School last Friday afternoon.

The pupil is also accused of holding teachers hostage in an office.

The school principal Steve Nemakhavhani said the pupil locked the door preventing the teachers from leaving the office. “He was not in possession of any weapon during the incident,” explained Nemakhavhani.

The boy refused to let the teachers out of the school office because they had confiscated his cap.

Nemakhavhani eventually managed to calm the minor down and the teachers escaped.

Later that day a classroom was set alight but members of the community helped put the fire out.

The second classroom was also set on fire on Sunday.

The Sunday incident was witnessed by deputy chair of the Emshukantambo School Governing Body William Zulu.

As Zulu was coming from church he saw smoke coming from the school.

“I rushed there to see what was happening and saw another classroom on fire.

“Eyewitnesses saw the same boy running away,” explained Zulu.

The incident was reported to the police.

Kliptown SAPS Thuli Ngwenya confirmed that an incident of that nature was reported and an investigation is underway but no arrests have been made.
