Still homeless after months of being evicted

Hundreds were evicted and are still homeless since August 2014. Weather conditions amongst other factors are making it hard to live on the streets.

Hundreds of people were evicted from their flats on Cnr Wanderers and Leyds, Johannesburg CBD on August 4, 2014 and again on August 25.

Months later, very little has been done to assist the victims and those affected.

Cases of rape have been reported as evicted victims sleep outside but no arrests have been made.

*Gloria, who lives in fear outside the vacant building recalled the harassment she received throughout the ordeal.

She expressed her sadness over treatment by the government and human rights organisation and association.

“Economic Fredom Fighters (EFF) and Inkatha Freedom Party are the only organisations that assisted us with food parcels. The ANC and human rights organisations have done nothing to help us,” she said.

Her sadness is fuelled by the response at those being evicted from the Methodist Church in Johannesburg while little is done to help them.

A case to assist them occupy their flats was recently dismissed in court.

“I have papers showing ownership and payments made towards my flat but that means nothing to these people”, she said “We’re labeled hijackers of these flats despite proof that we’re not”.

Gloria is also concerned about her nine-year-old granddaughter’s safety as cases of human trafficking and rape are on the rise.

The weather conditions have caused their belongings to decay.
