Matric group copying investigation underway

Those found guilty in the group copying scandal to be dealt with.

After the discovery of the group copying scandal at various matric centre’s last year, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) said investigation into the matter is underway.

The department said the first phase of the investigation of the mass copying into the 2014 National Senior Certificate examination is complete.

It said the DBE, Umalusi representatives and the provincial education department officials finished phase one of this process last week.

Now second phase will take place, where there will be hearings conducted.

The department said these would start with the chief invigilators and invigilators during the process Umalusi will monitor the entire process while teacher unions will observe at the hearings.

If pupils are found guilty they might be banned from re-writing their matric for three years while the invigilators might end up losing their jobs.

“Final outcome of investigation will be announced and the results of pupils whose cases have been cleared will be released.

“Those pupils that are found guilty will receive letters of sanction,” the department said.
