Walk-ins not allowed at UJ

University takes precaution after stampede.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) management have announced that there will be no walk-in applications allowed in any of their campuses for the 2015 intake.

Over 111 200 applicants applied in 2014 for 2015 first-year graduate studies at the institution as opposed to nearly 72 000 for the 2014 intake, according to UJ spokesperson Herman Esterhuizen.

This reflects an increase of more than 39 000 applications compared to the previous year.

The planned intake of undergraduate first-year students for 2015 is capped at 10 500, according to Esterhuizen.

This number of spaces available is in accordance with the formal Enrolment Plan approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Like other universities, UJ’s admission requirements differ across study programmes in the various faculties.

Esterhuizen further stated that UJ will review the status of all applicants based on the applicants’ final Grade 12 results from January 6 to 8.

All applicants will receive an SMS during this time which will confirm their final application status.

If applicants have not received an SMS from UJ by January 9, they must visit the UJ website (www.uj.ac.za) to verify their application status, or call the UJ call centre on 011 559 4555 for more information.

The university receives the Grade 12 results in electronic format and applicants are not required to submit a paper copy of their National Senior Certificate for the final selection process.

All enquiries regarding late applications, space availability or the change from one programme to another will be dealt with on the website via UJ’s Late Enquiry System or UJ’s call centre.

The enquiry system is available from January 9 to 13.

Successful applicants can access information pertaining to the registration process and schedule as well as the First Year Experience on the UJ website.

UJ stopped on-campus late application in 2012 when prospective students forced a UJ Kingsway Campus gate open, causing a serious stampede that resulted in the death of Gloria Sekwena.

She was trying to apply for her son Kgositsile Sekwena to study medicine at the institution.

The stampede also seriously injured 22 people.
