‘Parents need to be more involved’

Principal says pupils who have supportive parents tend to do better at school.

Mapule Morele the principal of Lofentse Girls High School in Orlando East said that she would like to urge parents to become more involved in their children’s education.

She explained most parents don’t take the time to be involved in their children’s schooling.

“When we have parents meetings only a selected few attend those meetings. Parents have to take their children’s education seriously,” she said.

Morele emphasised that teachers cannot solely be responsible for pupil’s education. She said that if parents are not involved it leaves a gap between the teacher and pupil and that gap has to be filled by the parents.

“Some of our girls give us their boyfriend’s contact details when we require their parents contact numbers,” she said.

Morele said she plans on involving parents more this year.

“Pupils who have supportive parents tend to do well at school, let us work together to improve our children’s education,” she said.
