Suicide is never the answer

Suicide is damaging to loved ones.

Suicide is never the answer to solving a problem.

It leaves families and friends blaming themselves for the death, questioning what they could’ve done to prevent it and scars them for years.

Esau Molaotsi, a counsellor at the Victim Empowerment Centre in Extension two said that suicide attaches a stigma to the family left behind.

“Society blames parents for suicide which is unfair to the family because it is bad enough that they must deal with the tragic death of their loved one,” he said.

The end of the year is usually a time when youth, especially, take their lives.

“There are different reasons for people taking their own lives.

“Some feel like a burden, others can’t deal with pain that comes with a sickness and some commit suicide because they are lonely,” Molaotsi said.

There are people who are there to listen and counsel those who are contemplating suicide.

The centre is equipped with counsellors who provide this service.

Lifeline has a 24 hour service where callers can talk about a range of problems.

While some attempt suicide for attention, there are people who think that it is the only solution to an end to their problems.

“These are the kind of people who will make sure that they do not survive,” said Molaotsi.

He said a person who threatens suicide is usually serious and families shouldn’t take the threat lightly.

“Deal with it head on, don’t be afraid to talk about suicide, it should be something you talk to your loved one about openly,” Molaotsi said.

People who attempted suicide and survive will try again until they get it right.

A person who isolates themselves is one to watch Molaotsi said.

He encourages those who have suicidal thoughts to seek professional help.

“We will never know what’s going on in their minds until they speak about their issues,” said Molaotsi.

The Victim Empowerment Centre is at 365 Main Road Extension two.
