Shoprite donates R20 000 to Orlando Secondary

Challenge to enhance pupils' entrepreneurial skills.

Orlando Secondary School in Orlando East were handed over a R20 000 cheque on Wednesday by Shoprite Championship Boerewors donations.

The CEO of the Shoprite Group, Whitey Basson accepted an Ice Bucket challenge after a nomination from Truworth’s Michael Mark and a number of other business associates.

The R20 000 that was donated will go towards the school buying boerewors, which they are able to use in school fundraising efforts.

The principal of the school Peter Nhlapho said that his school feels privileged to be one of the schools which have been chosen to benefit from the Championship Boerewors challenge.

He said that they have decided to sell Boerewors rolls at Orlando Stadium when there is a soccer game.

“We are grateful to Shoprite for the opportunity they have afforded us. Our pupils will learn entrepreneurial skills through this challenge,” said Nhlapho.

Basson has challenged the pupils to double the money that has been donated.

“We need to create jobs in South Africa which we continuously do at Shoprite, but I also believe we need to teach our children how to be entrepreneurs and create more jobs from a young age,” Basson said.

The pupils of Orlando Secondary said they are challenging themselves to triple the money.
