Hospital distances itself from staircase birth

Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital denies being negligent.

According to hospital records, Lillian Zhutseh (34) attended Mayfair Clinic during her pregnancy.

On October 2 at 7:30am she presented herself at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital complaining about lower abdominal pain.

She was assessed upon arrival and she was regularly checked by midwives and a doctor who were at the post.

At 2:05pm, she was diagnosed as not being in labour.

Both her and the baby were stable, she was subsequently counselled on the signs of labour before being discharged.

Later on the day she reported back at the hospital  where she was  assisted by staff from casualty and delivered a healthy baby.

She was also stable.

Zhutseh  was admitted for routine monitoring post-delivery.

As stated, Mrs Zhutseh was examined by three health workers who did not identify any signs of labour.

“It is worth noting that  precipitous labour does happen, this is a well-known entity in obstetrics, a case where labour and delivery results after an unusually short amount of time,” According to hospital management, she therefore experienced precipitous labour.

The patient is however welcome to come to the hospital if she has any concerns and they will be addressed accordingly.
