Gauteng finally has water

Water and Sanitation Minister says there was no water shortage in Gauteng but a technical glitch due to cable theft.

After almost three weeks of frustration, confusion and outrage, Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane has announced that water supply has been restored to Gauteng.

Residents in parts of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Pretoria have battled with supply for much of this month.

The minister clarified there was never a water shortage in Gauteng but rather a technical glitch due to cable theft that impacted distribution.

She said residents can now expect to see a difference.

“The situation is far better than what it was. We are quite certain that it has stabilised. However, there are things that may happen that are beyond our control.”

She said although water has been restored in parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni, the pressure might be low.

Meanwhile, Rand Water has again urged the public to use water sparingly in order to allow reservoirs to fill and water pressure to return to normal.

The minister said she is confident the situation will be resolved soon.
