Carjacking on the increase

Thieves target Trucks that transport goods.

Dobsonville police are concerned about the increase in carjacking cases and theft out of motor vehicles incidences occurring in the area.

A prominent case that happened recently is of the looting of goods from delivery trucks.

Thieves climb on the back of a truck, open the door, and throw out the goods while the truck is in motion.

Communications officer constable Mzwakhe Xazi said that there’s a 27-year-old suspect who was arrested last Thursday on this particular case.

“Two other suspects were arrested on the same case for interfering with police while they execute their duties,” said Xazi.

Xazi said the station has decided to issue safety tips to prevent carjacking.

Carjacking is an unlawful and intentional use of violence or threats to force submission to take another person’s motor vehicle.

Safety tips for carjacking prevention are;

–          Always be alert for suspicious persons; vehicles and loiterers.

–          Drive away quickly if any suspicious person approaches your vehicle.

–          Always keep doors locked and windows closed of your vehicle.

–          Keep valuables such as bags and cell phones out of sight.

–          Don’t respond to persons indicating that there is something wrong with your vehicle while driving.

–          Beware of people asking for directions especially in parking areas.

–          Make sure that you are not followed to and from work or home.

–          It’s important to remember details such as registration numbers or clothing distinguishing features like scars or beards.
