Chiawelo will be safe this winter season

Police pledge to fight crime.

“I’m well aware that my area has a high crime rate committed by the youth or the juvenile.”

These were the words of Moroka Police communications officer John Serala responding to crime stats released by the station.

Serala said the only way to fight crime is to introduce an activity festival around Chiawelo that young people can engage on.

“At the moment the only thing I can think of to help residents and the police to fight crime around Chiawelo is to host an activity tournament which will involve youth of Chiawelo and other areas around Soweto.

“The activities which we would encourage people to host include full ground soccer, netball, volleyball as well as indigenous games to keep the youth busy on the day,” he said.

Serala said youth commit crime or get involved in illegal activities because of different challenges they are faced with in their daily lives.

Serala said: “At the moment we are experiencing a high number of crime such as house breaking, theft, armed robbery and assault.

“So, we hope that this activity festival which the date will be set soon will really play a vital role in helping these youth to distance themselves from all mischievous activities they’ve engaged themselves in and focus on their school books and projects which will help them in a long run,” he said.
