EFF Soweto urges residents to vote

The EFF coordinator in Soweto, Koketso Poho said voter registration weekend marks a significant time for the lives of South Africans since it gives an opportunity to make their voices heard.

Not even the rainy weather could stop EFF members that were gathered at the Orlando Communal Hall from encouraging residents to vote in the next general elections.

This as the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) held its first voter registration weekend on November 18 and 19 to allow all eligible voters to register to vote in the upcoming 2024 National General Elections.

Residents came in numbers to register to vote.

The Electoral Commission said in a press statement that they welcomed eligible citizens at 23 296 registration stations across the country with an effort to provide an equal opportunity to all South Africans to access the voter registration process.

“Today we agree to encourage the community of Soweto to register to vote since our country is slowly collapsing in terms of the economy.

“The unemployment rate is going skyrocket and so is the cost of living which means black youth in our communities are unemployed.

“So we believe that the solution is not for us to fight physically, but to fight through the avenues afforded to us by democracy, which means elections,” Poho said.

He added that their slogan for this year is ‘2024 is our 1994’, which means they see this as a chance to grab the chance they failed to grab in 1994 to take the economy into the hands of the people.

“The issues that we are currently facing as South Africans are linked to land expropriation without compensation. Even in Soweto we have eight people living in one small house and we don’t have jobs for graduates, which means there is no plan from the government on how they will feed their families,” he added.

South Africa’s seventh democratic elections will be held between May and August 2024 and the exact date will be announced by the President early in 2024.
