The African Bank Soweto Marathon is ready to light up Soweto

Sowetans are ready to welcome runners for the 28 edition of the Soweto Marathon.

It’s all systems go for the 28th edition of the African Bank Soweto Marathon scheduled for Sunday, November 5.

Race officials together with sponsors and government representatives cut the ribbon declaring the race expo open on Friday morning.

The ribbon cutting ceremony also signalled the start of the race pack collection for participants.

Late last month, Soweto Marathon Trust spokesperson, Thokozani Mazibuko said they were happy with the entry numbers.

This as more people from across South Africa and other countries are eager to get back to the road post pandemic.

“Our numbers are similar to both the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon,”said Mazibuko. “We’re extremely proud of the fans for wholeheartedly embracing this race once more.”

The African Bank Soweto Marathon is fondly known as the people’s race and has become an important part of Soweto’s heritage.

Its scenic routes give runners a chance to explore some of the country’s historical and important monuments including the Walter Sisulu Square, Soweto Towers, Vilakazi Street, June 16 Memorial and more.

During the pre-race media briefing on Friday morning, Mazibuko thanked African Bank for coming on board as a headline sponsor. He also welcomed all runners to Soweto saying it will be a fun race to remember.

Commuters and drivers are advised plan their Sunday morning trips accordingly as major routes will be closed.
