COJ Speaker appeals to Naledi community to remain calm

The City of Johannesburg Speaker, Colleen Makhubele has pleaded with the community of Naledi to remain calm and allow investigations to unfold.

This comes after Makhubele visited the families of the two children who died over the weekend after allegedly eating expired biscuits bought from a foreign owned shop.

Two other children are still in a critical condition in hospital.

During an interview with the media, Makhubele said the City of Johannesburg will wait for the medical examination results as well as the post-mortem so as to have facts on what has caused the illness of the four children.

“I am appealing to the public to remain calm. I don’t think it serves us or the community to erupt in violence at this stage.

“I know that we are frustrated and angry because of what has happened, it is very tragic and has caused a lot of disturbance but let’s try to maintain peace amongst ourselves,” said Makhubele.

The Speaker also visited the local foreign owned shop to check if it was still operational but according to the community it has been days since the shop was closed.

Naledi resident, Lucky Motaung said this matter has now turned into a political chaos with supporters of different political parties fighting amongst themselves.

“We tried to fight this matter as a community, but now we are struggling because of all the political chaos that is now happening and it is affecting the community very badly,” said Motaung.

Makhubele has promised to support all the affected families throughout these hard times.
