Mourners celebrate the life of Zoleka Mandela

"Her determination to fight cancer was a source of inspiration for all who knew her."

On September 28, family and friends gathered at the Madikizela-Mandela family home in Orlando, to celebrate the life of activist and author Zoleka Mandela.

Zoleka Mandela died on September 25, at the age 43.

According to a statement released by the family, the grandchild of Nelson Mandela and Winne Madikizela Mandela died after being admitted to hospital on September 18 for ongoing treatment for metastatic cancer to the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord.

The statement further states that Mandela’s recent scans had revealed significant disease progression, including lung fibrosis as well as well as several emboli.

Mandela’s brother, Zwelabo was among the speakers and he gave a heartfelt tribute to his sister.

“Zoleka’s Journey to life was a testament to strength, resilience and unwavering dedication. From a young age she displayed an exceptional ability to rise above challenges setting the stage for her remarkable journey.

“Her determination to fight cancer was a source of inspiration for all who knew her,” said Zwelabo.

He added that Zoleka’s remarkable journey will continue helping other people fight for a brighter and healthier future.

“Zoleka taught us the true meaning of friendship, showing us that it’s not only about being there during the good times but also standing by each other in the face of challenges and in sickness,” said Mandela’s friend, Janine Wools.

Wools added that Zoleka’s memory should be honoured by extending the same kindness and warmth she freely gave to others.

Former minister, Lindidwe Sisulu said Zoleka Mandela was not a victim, she did not want to be identified as a victim but she was a survivor, she was a living example of success despite overwhelming challenges.

“Traditionally speaking Zoleka is my niece and I was asked to come forward today by her cousins. I understand why they asked me, I live with cancer myself and perhaps they thought I would be able to carry the message.

“Zoleka was a survivor and her story serves as a testimony of a human spirit fighting against life challenges,” said Sisulu.

Zoleka Mandela was laid to rest in a private funeral at the Bryanston Methodist Church on September 29.
