Mrs Soweto Charity 2023, Kefilwe Luczinski visited Paul Mosaka Primary School in Pimville on Friday to gift four learners with school uniform, stationery as well as a lunch date.

These leaners are taking part in the Gauteng Department of Education academic competition.

The purpose of the gifting function was to reward these learners for their hard work in reaching the district and provincial stage.

This was meant to also motivate these four to continue doing great in their academics and draw other learners into wanting to join these educational competitions.

“In partnership with Pick N Pay Maponya Mall, we are here to encourage and motivate them with tangible packages that will also assist them with school.

“We will also be taking them out for lunch because we realised that it’s these little things that keep a black child from the township motivated. Someone who acknowledges their dedication,” said Luczinski who is also the founder of Dyslexia SA.

According to Foundation Phase educator, Agnes Busakwe, their learners entered this education competition for Mathematics, Life Skills, Sesotho and Setswana. She believes that such competitions boost the learners’ self-esteem and drive them into working harder.

“When our learners get a chance to compete on these educational activities, they start to believe that something great can come out of previously disadvantage community,” she said.

As part of Luczinski’s campaign to help children from the township, she aims to educate the black society about dyslexia learning disability. Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. It also occurs across the range of intellectual abilities.

“We have realised that public school educators don’t know how to deal with learners who have dyslexia. So, we are aiming at conducting workshops for teachers as well as awareness drive for parents,” she said.

The social motivation of competing against one’s peers can challenge a student to work much harder on his or her tasks than he or she would independently feel compelled to do so.

Busakwe concluded with words of appreciation to both the parents and Mrs Soweto Charity 2023, “I would like to applaud the parents for always supporting their children during these competitions.

“We are also happy that Mrs Soweto Charity did not forget our children but came to make them feel special and continue to do well.”
