Celebrating community developers on Women’s Month

These are women who are often not recognised for the important work they do for the people around them.

As the country wrapped up Women’s Month, the Gauteng legislature hosted the ninth Annual Vita Basadi Awards on August 31 at the Johannesburg City Hall.

Vita Basadi Awards is an initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature led by the speaker, Ntombi Mekgwe.

It is aimed at honouring and recognising women who are making a difference in their communities.

From the field of business to community development, non-governmental sector and various other sectors, women who make a difference in their communities take centre stage at the Vita Basadi Awards.

They were presented with certificates, awards and cash prizes in a celebration of their work.

Thokozile Magagula, from the multiparty women’s caucus in the Gauteng Legislature said the event was founded nine years ago with a sole purpose of recognising and celebrating women who are making a difference in their communities.

These are women who are often not recognised for the important work they do for the people around them.

“In most cases these women are doing something in their communities but no one is saying thank you to them.

“As the legislature we want to say to them they must keep up their good work and put more effort in helping others,” said Magagula.

She went on to say the awards should also serve as an encouragement and motivation to those who want to do something to uplift their communities.

The night focused more on celebrations rather than long speeches. Fun and showmanship was the order of the day as every woman that was present felt celebrated.

Award winning duo, Jaziel Brothers also took to the stage and got the party started with guests dancing the night away.
