Spring Day to introduce sports in local schools

“Township schools need to reintroduce sports to the learners and educate them on different careers they can take in the sports industry."

Khandubuhle Primary School welcomed the spring season with a sports day for the learners. This event took place after UJ student social workers based at the school realised that the school lacked sports activities.

Minenhle Dlamini, assistant teacher and sports coach said, “Today we introduced spring day with sports and wellness.

“We have netball, soccer, aerobics and three tin which is an indigenous game to keep the learners aware of multiple sports activities.”

However, not every child is academically gifted and without sports that child falls in the risk of dropping out of schools later in life.

According to Sibahle Gumbi, a student social worker from UJ, democracy only goes as far as free education for township children. However, a child from a private school will always stand a better chance in life than a child from a public school due to extracurricular activities presented to them.

“Township schools need to reintroduce sports to the learners and educate them on different careers they can take in the sports industry.

“It is about time we remove those injustices that prevent learners from being the best versions of themselves,” said Gumbi.
