Sorbet hosts empowering programme for local women

“As young people, we need to challenge the misconceptions about what it means to come from a township and be looked down upon."

On August 24, Sharon Dikgale hosted her first women empowerment event for the Miss Soweto reigning, Queen Tsakane Sono and her two princesses, Fezile Ntloko and Karabo Legodi. The event took place at the L’Corro Shopping Centre in Northcliff, Johannesburg.

The event celebrated the strength, beauty, and intelligence of young, extraordinary South African women. It provided an opportunity for these women to share their stories, and inspire others to effect positive changes in their communities and on the world at large.

Miss Soweto, Tsakane Sono who is no stranger to effecting positive changes in her community, spoke about her work as an occupational therapist.

She dedicates most of her time to helping people with disabilities treat their physical, mental, developmental and emotional ailments that impact a their ability to perform daily tasks.

“As young people, we need to challenge the misconceptions about what it means to come from a township and be looked down upon.

“People don’t think that you can become someone great simply because of your background. But you can. It starts with giving back to your community the best way that you can,” Sono advised.

Women’s Month gives us an opportunity to pause and acknowledge the women we encounter every day as well as to recommit ourselves to the realisation of a society that is characterised by freedom, equality and safety.

Sono encourages young people to change the narrative in their communities by aligning their passions with community initiatives that uplift and empower people. But it all begins with love.
