Soweto Beauty queen visits local school to empower youngsters

“We involve their parents and advice both the learners and parents why certain learners would be good in a particular stream."

Former Miss Soweto first runner up, Ontshiametse Tlhopane visited Emshukantambo Secondary School on Thursday for a conversation around subject choices with the Grade 9 learners.

Grade 10 is an important milestone for a learner. It is important because that is when they need to choose subjects they will study in matric.

The subjects they you choose can determine what can can do in future.

While Tlhopane was addressing the learners, she explained the importance of choosing the correct subjects for Grade 10.

“I personally believe that the right subject choices determine the ability of a learner to be able to manage and cope through the different phases of one’s career,” she said.

“When you choose subjects that will lead to a career you are genuinely passionate about and interested in, then you can manage to hold on to your passion and vision when things get tough in the pursuit of your career.”

Teachers can play a critical role in ensuring that learners have a clear understanding of which subjects they should choose right before they progress to grade 10.

Deputy Principal, Pule Hlahane mentioned that the school works closely with the Life Orientation department, looking into the learner’s abilities, capabilities, talents and academic performance.

“We involve their parents and advice both the learners and parents why certain learners would be good in a particular stream.

“We also look at the learner’s performance from Grade 8 so as to prepare them for Grade 10 and the EFT phase,”Hlahane explained.

The school is also in partnership with the Youth Managers Foundation (YMF), a foundation that always organises seminars with different professionals to talk and advise Grade 9 learners in terms of careers.

“I would like to encourage parents to be open minded and patient with their children as they make decisions like these. It is very important that adults try not to project their dreams and expectations on their children,” Tlhopane concluded.

When considering your options for this balance of subjects, you should take into account your passion, your performance, as well as the potential options available to you in future.
