Explore Melville Koppies this spring

The Ledebourias were seen despite a very chilly Sunday morning.

When a cold front hits on a Sunday morning, we can stay in bed, but plants growing on the Koppies rely on other measures to trigger their movements.

The hyacinth family includes the Ledebouria that grows on the Koppies.

The plant, which has a bulb the size of an onion, turns inactive at the end of the summer and doesn’t come back until the longer days indicate it is time to send out its shoots.

The Ledebourias were seen on the many paths crossing the Koppies despite a very chilly Sunday morning. They are telling us that spring is approaching.

They are so tiny the entire plant fits in your hand, so be careful not to crush them with your boots.

Visitors can try to find them and look for additional springtime indications.

Spotting the Ledebouria is a sign that spring is on its way.
