Nominations for Gauteng sport awards are officially open

The time to honour and acknowledge those individuals in Sports has arrived.

The 12th annual Gauteng Sport Awards were officially launched on July 06 at Ellis Park Stadium under the theme of ‘Enabling excellence, inspiring the youth’.

Marissa Rose, Director of Sports Development and Co-ordination at the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation said, “The purpose of today is to launch and open the nomination process for the Gauteng sport awards so that the public can start nominating their sports people within the province.”

Communities are urged to recognise these sports individuals who are making a great name for themselves through the tireless work their put on their designated sports.

These are sports icons in the making, the ones that seek to make a great change in their communities through sports.

“The intention of the sports awards is to celebrate excellence in sports. We have introduced two new categories plus one that aims to recognise young people in sports from school level,” said MEC Morakane Mosupyoe for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

The sports industry is currently within a cycle of World Cups. So, the need to honour and recognise talent within the province is of great significance, not forgetting that sports is a unifier of the human race.

The nominees range from the under 13, to youth which include the most promising player and elite athletes. Nominations will close on August 4.

To encourage the youth from different townships Rose said, “Find a sport and let it become your home. It will take you away from substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. All great national team players come from humble beginnings, choose what will work for you.”

The awards will feature 20 categories, including Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Disabled Sportsman of the Year, Disabled Sportswoman of the Year, Most Promising Athlete of the Year, Amayanga-Yanga Player of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year and Fan of the Year. A new category included is the Sports Photographer of the Year.

A glittering gala event to announce the winners of the Gauteng Sports Awards will take place in November.

“We are taking the event to townships and this year it will be in the West Rand. There’s a lot of talent in townships and most of the time it’s left out because people are less privileged,” Mosupyoe concluded.
