According to the Founder of the campaign, Bongani Nkosi, the purpose of the day was to commemorate Youth Month by trying to come up with strategies to overcome challenges that are faced by the youth.

“We believe that by doing this campaign we will start seeing a number of young people coming to the library.

“It pains us to see how the youth is ignoring the value of utilising library resources and consuming educational information,” said Nkosi.

He added that initiatives such as the art of living should be implemented in the community.

These initiatives should be enforced to the youth and organisations that want to help reduce drug consumption should always be available to advise and change the mind-set of the youth.

Intemogele Primary School learners came out in their numbers to attend the programme and were taught about coding systems after the event.

This was a way of showing them that libraries offer a lot of activities not just reading books.

“We decided to invite Itemogelo Primary School learners because when we look at the surroundings through research it shows that most of them are exposed to drugs because their institution is not far from the place where people use to smoke drugs,” Explained Nkosi.

Different organisations such as SANCA Soweto and Community Raise Uthando were invited to come and give motivational talks to the audience.

“I am very happy to see such campaigns because this shows gratitude and making amends to the community. I was once a drug addict and to be honest I did a lot of bad things in my community, so me being here today shows that I’m paying back to the people I did wrong,” said Manqoba Nkunzi, the Founder of Community Raise Uthando.

Nkunzi added that communities should start supporting those who are addicted to drugs because they are not bad people but instead they took bad decisions, and they must stop judging them.
