The elderly celebrate Heritage Day
The Johannesburg Older Persons Forum last Wednesday hosted a king and queen competition to celebrate heritage month at the Pimville Community Centre.
Over 15 clubs from Soweto participated and made the day a special one. Representing different groups the participants filled the hall with their different traditional attire.
The oldest woman in attendance was a 90-year-old and the oldest man was 80-years-old. Different songs were sung to celebrate the competition and different dance items were presented by the elderly.
“Today is a special day indeed as this hall is filled with love and an energetic spirit by everyone present.
“After all the planning to make the day a success, I am happy that it worked out,” says Kidi Tshukudu from the Vuka Ozivusayo Senior Citizen’s Club.
As part of the organising committee Esther Lebello said the elderly cooked traditional food to make the day a special one.
“The king of the day was from the Vuka Ozivusayo Senior Citizen’s Club and the queen was from the Sedibeng Sa Bophelo Senior
Citizen’s Club in Mapetla,” she said.
Boitumelo Day Care provided some entertainment for the attendees.
“The day showed that only those that want to age will age.
“We were very impressed as some people showed of their art and crafts,” she said
