Local games held in celebration to youth day

The local which teams which participated in the games include, Diepkloof Liverpool, All Stars FC, Diepkloof Gaits and Diepkloof Headboys which is also as Zone 2 Masters.

Residents gathered at Diepkloof Sport Grounds to witness the 2023 June 16 Wafa-Wafa Games which saw local teams work up a sweat to win this year’s title.

The local teams which participated in the games include, Diepkloof Liverpool, All Stars FC, Diepkloof Gaits and Diepkloof Headboys which is also known as Zone 2 Masters.

Diepkloof Liverpool won 2-0 against Diepkloof Headboys in the finals.

According to one of the organisers, Mohau Sphandla the main idea behind the games was to bring soccer back to the area and get residents together in one place through the beautiful game as they celebrate Youth Day.

“We are mainly focusing on children and keeping them off the streets, but most importantly we want them to take pride in their soccer talent and embrace local football because that is where professional football players start.

“We believe that by having these games, young people will grow their love for soccer and be motivated to take it to the next level,” Sphandla said.

This soccer games however, took an unexpected turn as it featured players from the age of 40 years old and upward.

With the words of encouragement from commentator, Lefty Ratshisane and Seun Maditsha the players were able to battle it out in the field with Diepkloof Liverpool winning the tournament by beating Diepkloof Headboys in the final with 2-0.

“Some of the players participating today are players that used to play professionally and are admired by locals.

“Once we get the community back to the grounds, we can then proceed to organise games for younger players.

“Diepkloof used to boast huge crowds or spectators when these known players were playing and that is exactly what we are trying to achieve,” said Sphandla.
