SARS opens new office in Soweto

Bringing services closer to the people.

As tax season officially kicked off earlier this week, a new SA Revenue Services branch office opened its doors near the Bara Mall for Soweto residents.

This new site will work at easing pressure from the already existing Soweto branch office in Dude and this will help in bringing services closer to the people.

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene encouraged people to submit their tax returns.

In a recent media briefing, the minister said 14 000 SARS officials would be positioned at numerous offices throughout the country to make the process of filing simpler for all.

SARS Acting Commissioner Ivan Pillay encouraged residents to check the credibility of their tax practitioners and to make sure they are registered.

Pillay said that there are about 38 000 tax practitioners and close to 11 000 are accredited.

He said it is only those that are accredited that will be able to complete and submit tax returns on the tax payers’ behalf.

Nene and Pillay warned that officials would be observing for fraudulent and corrupt individuals and that these people would be dealt with.

According to SARS, tax deadline for the manual submission of tax returns will be September 26, however, the deadline for all non-provisional taxpayers will be November 21.

The cut off date for provisional taxpayers using e-filing is January 30, 2015.
