Township entrepreneurial awards held at Soweto Theatre

This was the celebration of the top 12 performing township businesses as well as the announcement of the top four winners who showed improvement during the programme.

On Saturday, June 10, Amstel hosted the Township Entrepreneur Awards at the Soweto Theatre.

This was the celebration of the top 12 performing township businesses as well as the announcement of the top four winners who showed improvement during the programme.

The four winners that walked away with R100 000 each to grow their businesses are; Katlego Chacha (Mr Bartender), Bryan Monethi (Excellence Mobile Bar), Samuel Mazibuko (iTaxi Ubuntu App) and Lebohang Nyandeni (Lebz Cafe).

Khaya Dlanga, one of the mentors and author of To Quote Myself said, “These kinds of campaigns are very important because they get into communities not just for business to make money, but they are about raising future potential township entrepreneurs.”

Township entrepreneurs have this philosophy that even though they may not be qualified to do anything, they do not disqualify themselves from doing anything to turn their dreams into reality.

One of the winners, Bryan Monethi of Excellence Mobile Bar shared an insightful outcome about his business.

“We started this as a side hustle and today we are a business. We are the ‘malume weskhiye’ on family gatherings that does not just give anyone alcohol.”

According to well-known DJ and business woman who mentored the top 12 entrepreneurs, DJ Zinhle, one of the most important aspects of entrepreneurship is the journey not the destination. How you grow as a township business is determined by your attitude as you climb the ladder.

“It is important to respect the journey and understand its purpose.

“We will not always win; we learn from our failure and every time we fail, we get up and do it again. Businesses are built on consistency.”

The definite aim for this campaign is to create more jobs for the South African youth. To all township entrepreneurs, when you start thriving in your business do not forget to send the elevator down for your fellow small business owners.
