Health Campaign holds Wellness Day

She urged residents to start prioritising such opportunities for their own good because such events happen once in a while.

Residents of Protea South came out in their numbers to participate in the Wellness Day event that was held at the Protea Multipurpose Hall.

Right to Care and Project Last Mile Wellness Campaign under the USAID programme hosted the event to bring integrated health services closer to the people.

Various health tests such as Pap smear, blood pressure, HIV/AIDS, Prostate cancer, measles vaccine for children, Covid-19 vaccine and cholesterol were done at the event.

According to USAID’s Heena Brahmbhatt they have provided funding to partners of the Department of Health to develop and execute national Covid campaigns in order to encourage vulnerable citizens to get fully vaccinated and priorities their health.

“As a way of showing support, we have partnered with the South African government and the National Department of Health from the start of the Covid pandemic and we are really proud partners in the space,” said Brahmbhatt

The event was also attended by the SA united Stakeholders, Goleka Care Centre, ward Councillor, Protea South Senior Citizens, Dobsonville 1 Stakeholders, Embali ye Nkanyezi NPO, Imbewu Yesizwe, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), CWP and Ward Based Primary Health Care Team in South Africa (WBOTS).

“Today we are having a health drive, USAID has brought all the different integrated health stakeholders to provide different health services to the community of Protea South. Seeing such event here makes me excited because this shows that the community is now getting the attention they deserve,” said the Ward Councillor, Nokuthula Nofela.

Nofela added that it is very important to have such awareness programmes so that people can be educated about different types of health issues.

She urged residents to start prioritising such opportunities for their own good because such events happen once in a while.

The Wellness Day has been happening across different areas in Soweto in order to allow communities to have access to different health services and also to address the issue of Covid-19 because the pandemic still exists.

“We are grateful for what USAID did for us as a community, this event is helpful because it is not easy to receive proper services from our community clinics especially when it comes to things like COVID-19 boosters, most clinics do not offer them anymore,” said a resident who attended the event, Mfana Ernest Simanga.
