It is no doubt that South African townships carry a lot of young people who are talents and have big dreams for themselves.

However, the process of unlocking that potential and placing them where they want to be is always inhibited by their insufficient economic status.

Angela Thomas, qualified dance teacher at the academy explains that she has been postponing every year to allow the children who win local dance competitions before they can go compete internationally.

“I had a lot of doubts which have been driving me to continue not allowing my kids to compete abroad.

“I mean I had to think of the reality which is money to help us reach our goals,” said Thomas.

With 20 children who have made it to the WLDF from the academy. Thomas aims to create an environment whereby the youth of Eldorado Park invest their time on things that will bear positive fruits for their future.

Using dance as a tool that teaches them the importance of being present, to be where their feet are. Meaning forgetting the outside noise that constantly reminds them of their limits.

Thomas explains, “Dancing is not only emotionally and mentally helpful but it is also great for physical activity and keeps our kid’s bodies healthy and energetic.

“Dancing allows you to express all your emotions and get everything your feeling out and by doing that it also captivates self-motivation and gives our kids the ability and inner drive to say that ‘I can do it’.”

Thomas is urging the community to assist in keeping the children and the youth off the streets. To help them realise the greatness that lies within them.

“We need Sponsors that can help us to get our kids overseas to bring home the trophy. Our kids have worked really hard since they started dancing with me and it has paid off,” Thomas concluded.
